Who we are

Welcome to the Tipi Moza (Iron Homes) website!

Tipi Moza (Iron Homes) is an urban First Nation, Metis and Inuit housing provider developed under the CMHC Urban Native Housing Program (post 1985). It was founded in 1989 by members of the Indigenous community, in response to the need for subsidized housing for First Nation, Metis and Inuit families. The organization received sufficient funding from CMHC to purchase 17 homes (two-, three-, and four-bedrooms) that are rented to First Nation, Metis and Inuit households at rents based on income.

In 2004, Tipi Moza was the second non-profit organization in Canada to be selected to purchase a federal government building made available under the Surplus Federal Real Property for Homelessness Initiative. Tipi Moza purchased the former RCMP offices, located at 1061 Johnson Street, and with provincial funding under the Supporting Communities Partnership Initiative (SCPI), converted the offices to two accessible affordable units (one two-bedroom and one three-bedroom) and one market-rent unit (four bedroom) for First Nation, Metis and Inuit families.

In 2012, Tipi Moza conducted a First Nation, Metis and Inuit Housing Needs Survey, which identified the need for bachelor and one-bedroom affordable apartments. In 2013, they applied to Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services (OAHS) and were approved for funding. In 2013/2014, they purchased six units: two bachelor, three one-bedroom, and one three bedroom units. They are rented to First Nation, Metis and Inuit families at affordable rents.
